A 30 km cinematic highway slicing through the brilliant white salt flats of the Great Rann — connecting Khavda village to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Dholavira. One of India's most photographed roads, dubbed a "heavenly experience" by travellers worldwide.
The Road to Heaven — locally called Varudu Road or the Khavda-Khadir Highway — is a ruler-straight stretch of ~30 kilometres of jet-black tar road traversing the brilliant white salt flats of the Great Rann of Kutch. It connects the artisan village of Khavda to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Dholavira, located on Khadir Bet island.
Construction began in 2019, and the road was officially cleared and opened to the public in 2023 ahead of the G20 Summit hosted by India. Since then, it has become one of the most photographed roads in India — viral on social media, featured in countless travel reels, and dubbed a "heavenly experience" by motorbike enthusiasts and road-trip lovers.
What makes this drive truly magical is the optical illusion — during post-monsoon months (October–November), shallow water on either side creates a perfect mirror reflection of the sky, making it appear as if you're driving on water or through the clouds. In dry winter months (December–February), the brilliant white salt flats stretch to the horizon on both sides, creating a surreal, otherworldly landscape.
Make the most of this surreal 30 km drive — six experiences to plan.
The road starts at Khavda village — best reached from Bhuj or Dhordo.
