About the Destination

The Highest Point in Kutch

Kala Dungar — meaning "Black Hill" in Gujarati — is the highest point in Kutch, standing at 462 metres (1,516 ft) above sea level. From this viewpoint, travellers get the only true panoramic view of the Great Rann of Kutch — endless white salt flats stretching to the horizon, with the Pakistan border just 40 km north.

The hill is home to a 400-year-old Dattatreya Temple, where a unique jackal-feeding ritual has continued for centuries. Local legend says Lord Dattatreya stopped here, found a group of starving jackals, and offered his own body to feed them — which miraculously regenerated. Today, priests still prepare and serve cooked rice to wild jackals every evening around sunset (5:30–6:00 PM).

Kala Dungar is also famous for the Magnetic Hill phenomenon — a fascinating optical illusion where vehicles in neutral gear appear to roll uphill against gravity. It's actually caused by the obstructed horizon creating a visual illusion (the slope is technically downhill, but appears uphill). The Tropic of Cancer marker along the road and proximity to the India Bridge make it a destination of geographic curiosity as well as natural beauty.
