About the Destination

A Tribute to Resilience

Smritivan — meaning "Forest of Memories" — is the largest memorial and museum in modern India, spanning 470 acres on Bhujia Hill in Bhuj. Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on August 28, 2022, it pays solemn tribute to the nearly 13,000 victims of the devastating 2001 Gujarat earthquake whose epicentre was Bhuj itself.

Designed by the renowned architectural firm Vastushilpa Sangath, the museum spans 10,900 square metres and gracefully zigzags up Bhujia Hill, blending seamlessly with the landscape. Its galleries trace the unique heritage, culture, crafts, and wildlife of Kutch, while powerfully documenting the earthquake's impact through innovative tactile, virtual, and immersive technology. In 2024, Smritivan was selected for the prestigious UNESCO Prix Versailles Museums World Selection — a global recognition of its design excellence.

Beyond the museum, the memorial park features the world's largest Miyawaki Forest with over 300,000 plants, creating a living, breathing monument that also serves as the green lung of Bhuj. A Sun Point viewpoint atop the hill offers panoramic sunrises and sunsets. The memorial follows the philosophy of "plant a tree for each victim" — making remembrance an act of regeneration.
