About the Destination

India's Most Extraordinary Craft Village

Nirona is a small but extraordinary village of about 6,000 residents, located 40 km northwest of Bhuj in the heart of Kutch. Despite its size, it safeguards some of India's rarest artistic traditions — most notably Rogan Art, copper bell making, and traditional lacquer craftsmanship.

The village's most famous craft is Rogan Art, brought to Nirona from Iran 300 years ago (the word "Rogan" means "oil-based" in Persian). It involves painting intricate designs on fabric using a paste made from castor oil heated for 12 hours and mixed with stone pigments — applied with a stick, never touching the cloth directly. The Khatri family is the only family in the world still preserving this 300-year-old craft, with the tradition passed down through 8 generations.

The Khatri family has earned global recognition: Abdul Gafur Khatri received the Padma Shri in 2019, and the family's iconic "Tree of Life" Rogan paintings were gifted by PM Modi to former US President Barack Obama (2014) and Queen Margrethe II of Denmark. Their work has been showcased at New York Fashion Week (2022), Lakmé Fashion Week, and UK Fashion Week. Beyond Rogan Art, Nirona is also home to skilled bell-metal craftsmen who hand-forge copper bells using a unique interlocking system without welding, and lacquer artisans creating colourful wooden ware.

Best Time to Visit

October to March — Pleasant for Workshop Visits

The most comfortable time is October to March — pleasant weather for moving between workshops and walking the village lanes. Rann Utsav season (Nov–Feb) is busiest, so workshops may be crowded; book Rogan Art demonstrations in advance. Mornings (10 AM – 1 PM) are typically best — artisans are working, lighting is good for photos, and you can watch the entire craft process. Avoid summer (April–June) due to extreme heat in the open village.
